Trip Highlights

60 Miles / 100 km +17,340’ / +5,285 m -17,765’ / -5,415 m

Alta Via 4 is characterized by an incomprehensibly daring network of trails, assisted by via ferrata, which wind through unfathomably dramatic alpine terrain. Along the way, we’ll stay at charming Italian rifugios that serve delicious three course meals; and we’ll sleep in beds. Thanks to this convenient infrastructure, we’ll carry light packs—but the terrain itself will provide plenty of challenges throughout the journey.

This is truly the best hiking in the Dolomites.

What to expect

  • Activities

Strenuous (and sometimes moderate) hiking on mostly good, but sometimes rough trails, covering 9 to 12 miles (15 - 19 km) and typically +4,000’ (+1,220 m) on most days; through rugged terrain; up to a maximum elevation of 2,560 m / 8,400'. The longest day will be 7-8 hours of hiking; 12.5 miles (20 km,) +4,000’ (1,220 m.)

This trek is enjoyable for fit, adventurous people; and achievable for people who are willing to put in the work to prepare. No previous trekking or backpacking experience is required.

  • Climate

Autumn temperatures are typically 40 - 70°F during the day, and 24 - 40°F at night. Rain or snow is possible.

  • Lodging & Cuisine

Accommodation consists of scenic and comfortable Italian rifugios strategically positioned along the route. These are dorm-style, with running water and flush toilets; and some even have hot showers (available for an additional fee.) Blankets and pillows are provided, however, you must bring a sleeping bag liner for hygiene and comfort.

Dinner consists of home-cooked three course meals, with both meat and vegetarian options. Breakfast buffets are simple, and consist of charcuterie-style meats and cheeses, bread, butter, jams, coffee, and tea. Snacks—including fresh apple strudel—can be purchased at the rifugios.
